A mediocre book featuring a much too intelligent and patient psychiatrist and a very mediocre girl suffering from a very mediocre depression. As someone who understands depression and who has lived through a very strong, all-encompassing one, I can state that this is a very shallow exploration of this condition. I would have given this book more credit had it not been for the incredibly boring and borderline unreadable final chapter, which serves no purpose, is extremely irrelevant and just makes me dislike this human more. It did not help that I had a friend (emphasis on the had) who was very similar to the protagonist, a shallow, self obsessed pathetic creature with low self esteem and deep hypocritical maliciousness. Overall, I think this short read brings nothing to the discussion surrounding depression.

“Life is all about getting better and getting worse and getting better again, so getting worse is a natural part of life and I just have to learn to deal with it”

Such an important book, it’s amazing how relatable it is.

A lot of chapters felt very relatable. Some not so much. But I found it interesting how a psychiatrist would potentially respond to some issues that I have that the author also dealt with. I loved the reflections at the end.
The book just ended. And I think that is how it is. Life is about becoming aware of our underlying issues and making an effort to improve them and then fail and then try again.
