This short story was a little hard to follow, mostly it's depressing since the woman is trying to get her wildlife garden together but the neighbor messes that up and she starts being mad at him for everything in her life

I really enjoyed this and would have given it 4 stars, but the ending threw me off so much I had to knock it down one. The writing style is beautiful, and I particularly love the way the author describes the main character’s thought process and her interactions with other characters. This story is also truly, thoroughly creepy and it made my skin crawl. I actually wish this wasn’t a short story, because the plot is so mysterious and compelling I want to know more!

~ she’d told herself the night goggles would just be to look at wildlife from the deck at night. but that was a lie. the ghost in her had always meant to buy them for the purpose of spying on people. that’s just what ghosts did.

i’m conflicted.

on one hand, this story was incredible. i love the way jeff vandemeer writes, it was so easy to immerse myself in this world, the words were honestly so beautifully placed together?

but the ending sucked. i don’t know if it’s meant to be something you’re meant to ~get~ (like the ending of donnie darko) but i was so upset that there was nothing. it’s not even a cliffhanger, it’s like the author just stopped writing at the end of a sentence and called it a day.

read this because the words are pretty. no, she’s not a ghost, i did hope for that for most of the way through it. don’t read this if you’re not feeling great because the ending will make you feel even worse. don’t listen to the audio of it either because the voices were so distracting and a little silly.

i’m aware i sound grumpy af, maybe i am, but i’m just really disappointed
