This is pretty great.

Full review:

Elliot is a little elephant living in the big city. Amidst all of the hustle and bustle, Elliot finds a lot of things to enjoy--even with the unique challenges of being a small elephant in a big a city. Elliot especially loves cupcakes! Unfortunately, being so small, it isn't easy to reach the counter and buy his special treat. When Elliot meets a white mouse who is even smaller than himself, Elliot realizes that new friends can be even sweeter than a tasty cupcake in Little Elliot, Big City (2014) by Mike Curato.

Little Elliot, Big City is Curato's first picture book.

This delightful story of unlikely friends is visually stunning with beautiful illustrations of bustling New York City streets and even a picture of the iconic Flatiron building. Vintage cars and soft tones make this a quiet read that hearkens back to simpler times.

Elliot is a delightfully quirky and capable main character who is a real problem solver (at one point he uses a broom to get ice cream out of his freezer!). Curato's sure drawing style and large illustrations bring Elliot to life and add a lovely dose of pathos to Elliot's meeting with mouse. Readers will cheer when together Elliot and Mouse finally get their cupcake.

Curato's deceptively simple text and intricate illustrations make Little Elliot, Big City a delight and definitely mark Curato as a picture book talent to watch.

A new favorite picture book! Wonderful illustrations and a heart-warming story of an elephant who is all alone in the big city, but when he helps out someone even smaller than himself, he finds help in return...and a new friend. And there are cupcakes!
I think Elliot and [b:Elmer|1223119|Elmer|David McKee|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1388195928s/1223119.jpg|1178938] would be friends.

A delightful and magnificently illustrated children's book about a little elephant who finds encouragement from an unexpected new friend.

Little Elliot is a tiny elephant trying to get by in the Big City. But because of his small size, he is easily lost in the crowd and ignored. It is difficult for him to accomplish daily chores and errands. And most importantly, he can never get the attention nor help he needs to buy a much wanted cupcake.
Until one day, he meets someone who is even smaller than he is - a little white mouse - who seems to be struggling with the same things that Little Elliot is.
Together they become friends, a team, and they help each other accomplish the things that they have always wanted to do. And in the end, they are finally rewarded with a cupcake.

When it comes to picture books, the actual illustrations have to tell me the story - but they not only need to tell me the story, they also need to make me feel what the characters are feeling and thinking before I read the words that are accompanying that page's storytelling. Mike Curato not only gives us the sweetest little elephant and mouse I have ever seen, but also delivers exactly how a little person would portray and feel being in a large city - making us feel even smaller, lonely and sad. But also, through Little Elliot and his mouse friend, gives us encouragement and hope that one day we can accomplish the big things that we want to do.

Little Elliot may be a tiny elephant, but he has the biggest heart I have ever seen, and felt. I highly recommend adding this to your child's shelf and reading it over and over again... one to be handed down to generations to come!

*I received an ARC from the publisher for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

I loved, loved, loved this cute little story and now plan to read the other books in this series. I also loved, loved, loved the illustrations and am so very happy to have found this book on YouTube. I would like to buy them physically as well so I'm hoping to be able to find the whole set on Amazon or wherever I can get them. Amazing! Please read this book. Please buy this book. Please find many children to gift this book to as well. It's so good! And cute!!
