Why did it take me so long to get around to reading this? 15 years really? I’m mad at myself

I read this as a reward for getting through studying for boards each day. It was super easy and fun. The end was a little predicable (maybe because I’m a grown adult reading a kids book??) I’ve definitely read better YA books, I’m looking at you SoC and HP.
None the less, I will read them all because I’m a sucker for YA and mythology!

I had a lot of fun reading this book. It's a great update on Greek mythology: Poseidon is a Jimmy Buffet-esque beach bum, Ares is a Hell's Angel, and Medusa sells eerily lifelike garden gnomes. If this series had been around when I was a kid, I'd have eaten it up with a spoon. I will definitely be reading the next one soon.

I can see why this was so popular! Percy is a totally fun and likable guy. There is great adventure, neat characters, cool settings. I love all the Greek Mythology because who isn't totally into that. I usually only read the first book of a popular kids series so I get the gist, but I'm tempted to read more!

What if I told you that children’s/young adult fantasy has me, a 28-year-old woman, in an absolute chokehold? I’m rereading all of the major fantasy series from my childhood and having the best time. Percy Jackson is a fantastic series/concept that I thoroughly enjoyed in my childhood, and I’m thoroughly enjoying now.
The series starts with Percy, a troubled youth who’s been expelled from 6 schools in 6 years because weird shit keeps happening and he’s got a bit of a temper. At Yancy’s, which is kind of Percy’s last hope, he’s attacked by his math teacher that he then literally vaporizes in the presence of his Latin teacher and is then violently gaslit for the rest of the school year about the existence of said math teacher. But it turns out it’s because he’s The Chosen Oneson of Big Three Poseidon and probably one of the most powerful demigods in the Western Realm. And all the gods are looking for him cause they think he stole Zeus’s favorite lightning bolt to start a war between the gods and a bunch of deities want him dead. Not ideal. He travels from NYC to Los Angeles, which is of course where the underworld is located to try to reason with Hades, and returns to Mount Olympus which is located in the penthouse of the Empire State Building and returns all missing valuables to all gods, meets his dad, and fulfills the prophecy predicted by the Oracle In The Attic. I was so glad the friend who betrayed him wasn’t Grover or Annabeth my heart wouldn’t be able to take it.
This is a wonderfully charming and funny modernization of the Greek gods, a hyper-fixation of my childhood, bringing new life and fantastic imagination to the gods, goddesses, and myths that I was obsessed with as a child. Riordon presents an honest portrayal of the gods, maintaining their many flaws and character quirks (arrogant, low key way too into intercourse with mortals, quick to anger, and super dramatic). But he also gives us a great hero/sidekick duo in Percy and Annabeth. I can’t wait to revisit the rest of this universe. Let’s kick some Titan ass!
