I picked this up to read with my currently princess-obsessed 4 year old, not realising this was the same Shannon Hale who wrote Austenland - neat! In any case, my daughter and I both really enjoyed the Princess in Black! It was her first early chapter book, and there were enough images to still hold her interest. Combined with the story itself she sat still through the entire book, not wanting to stop until we've finished. So that makes it a winner to me!

We both hope there will be more books in this series, hopefully with the goat boy Duff (even if he isn't actually half goat half boy).

Princess Magnolia is a very proper princess - with a very improper secret. When monsters threaten the kingdom, she dons a black disguise and rides away to vanquish them. Cute art and story, with some nice suspense (will the duchess find out her secret?). I also liked how the goatherd was inspired by the princess, and would definitely read one of their next adventures.

Cute early chapter book that I read aloud to my daughter. She liked the illustrations, and as she gets a little older, I think she will like a monster fighting princess. It was the perfect balance of words and pictures so that her attention didn’t wander too much, and I was entertained as the adult reader.
