I liked it okay enough…but I have questions about Carter and Emma’s first encounter and how he didn’t recognize her? Also, despite their history it felt a bit insta-lovey for me…maybe would have enjoyed some flashbacks of them growing up. It also could have been wrapped up a bit quicker than it was.

Normally editing errors don't bother me at all. The errors in this book created confusion. The character is going to one person's apartment building but it says she shows up at another person's place! There was really no introduction of many of the characters. They just show up and you don't even know where the heroine met them or knew them from until much later. The plot was really good but I wish the execution had been better.

3 Could have been 4 or 5 Stars.

**Some Spoilers**

Carter Reed had so much potential. Not saying that it was horrible, but it could have been better.

The story starts off with Emma walking in to her roommate and best friend being raped and nearly killed by her boyfriend. Emma does what she has to do and kills him to save both their lives, because Emma knows if she doesn't, he'll kill them both. But Emma also knows they gotta move fast, cause the now dead boyfriend is in with the Mob, and she knows they'll be coming for them.

Emma goes to the one man she knows can help her. Carter Reed. He and Emma were close once, before a tragedy changed both their lives. Carter is mysterious, feared by just about everyone, and sexy as hell. When Emma goes to him to ask for help he steps in and takes charge, telling her he'll do anything to keep her safe, even Declare War.

Unfortunately this it goes down hill from here for me. Everything happens way too fast after Emma goes to Carter for help, and the other characters lacked depth, and I wanted more. More info about Emma and her friends, what's their history? How did they meet? All I know is that they are friends and roommates. I wanted to know more about Emma and Carter, there's not much history for them either. Yeah I know that they were close when they were younger, and that Carter sometimes slept on their couch, but that's all I know. I just didn't feel the connection to these characters the way I wanted to, and a few of them were just ridiculous. (And I can see why Carter let them die).

And I love, love, love getting both sides of the story, whether it's back and forth between chapters, or a whole other book, so when I turned a page and saw I was gonna get Carters POV, I was so excited! However, it was written in third person, where the rest of the story is written in first person. Definitely not a deal breaker, but it threw me. And I wish there was more, (yes, I'm needy...I need more) instead of the little snippets that we get. There wasn't even a whole chapter dedicated to Carter, I was lucky if there was a whole page. Major tease!

I have never read this author before, so I had no idea what to expect. From what I saw a lot of people loved this book. I just didn't get what I needed from it.

"You don't trust anyone, no one except Carter. Go to Carter. He'll take care of everything. He'll take care of you, Ems. I promise."

One of the last things Emma's brother AJ told her, before he was killed, was to trust no one but Carter. If she was in trouble, she should go to Carter. But it's been 10 years since AJ died. 10 years since she's seen Carter. In those 10 years Carter has changed. Beyond being absolutely gorgeous, Carter Reed has become a killer. He slaughtered all who were responsible for AJ's death and then joined with an infamous mob family to be their hit man. This is not the Carter that Emma once knew.

But when Emma walks in on her roommate being raped and choked by her boyfriend, she shoots first and asks questions later, her only option is to follow AJ's advise. Go to Carter. Unfortunately the boyfriends family is the same family responsible for AJ's death, and now Carter must protect her.

"I would declare war for you."

Oh Tijan, making women all over the world dream of having their own mob hit-man to love.

This book started off with a bang, immediately capturing you into the story. It was intense and you needed to know what would come next that there was no chance of you putting down your ereader. Then you get to Mr Silent but Deadly himself and you're basically in insta-love. Carter Reed is the strong silent type. He's not Mr Hearts and Flowers but when he shares his emotions, it's deep and real and you can do nothing but fall in love with him. Plus, hello, he has no problem murdering anyone who is a risk to your safety. There's lots of action in this book, friendships tested, and a good dose of hot sex.

Messages from friends while reading Carter Reed:

"Have you read Carter Reed? Swooooooon"

"I know you're sleeping but fuck, Carter, I'M IN LOVE"
