Definitely shows it was written and drawn by men lol art is awesome regardless. Took a while to get into the storyline but eventually breezed thru it.

Художник Джо Бенитез успешно рисовал комиксы для DC и Image, но пару лет назад решил исполнить свою мечту, основал собственное издательство и запустил две серии авторских комиксов, в которых выступил автором и художником: городское фэнтези Wraithborn и стимпанк "Леди Механика". Первый том "Механики" уже официально перевели и издали в России, и он попал мне в руки, после чего был прочитан влет.
Викторианская Англия, 19-й век. Механика - жемчужина Британского Содружества, самый высокоразвитый мегаполис, который называют "городом будущего". Именно там обитает Леди Механика - искательница приключений, наемная охотница на нечисть и частный детектив, легендарная героиня приключенческих новелл, любимых детьми и взрослыми. "Леди Механика" - имя данное таблоидами, после того как ее еще подростком обнаружили единственной выжившей в лаборатории неизвестного, но несомненно сумасшедшего ученого, который "усовершенствовал" ее механическими конечностями. Никакой памяти о былой жизни или заключении в лаборатории у Механики не осталось, но она не теряет надежды когда-нибудь найти своего мучителя и выяснить, кем она была.
Надежда эта с новой силой оживает, когда на городском вокзале обнаруживают труп молодой девушки, с механическими усовершенствованиями, подобными тем, которыми владеет Механика. Леди-детектив бросается в погоню за ускользающей ниточкой, пытаясь опередить армию наемников лорда Блэкпула - злобного викторианского Илона Маска, обладателя заводов, газет, пароходов, а также механической челюсти и ноги (последнее - результат неудачной встречи с Механикой). За спиной Блэкпула маячит загадочный Коллектив - объединение лучших умов Земли ради прогресса...любой ценой.
А вскоре к гонке за механическим трупом присоединяется загадочный мистер Кейн, обладатель могущественных и мистических сил. Некогда он работал на Блэпула, проводя ужасные эксперименты ради механического усовершенствования человека, но их пути разошлись. Является ли Кейн тем безумцем, что некогда ставил эксперименты и над Механикой? Или сам является одним из таких экспериментов?
В поисках ответов на вопросы Леди Механика и ее верный компаньон, изобретатель-алкоголик мистер Льюис, дерутся с клоунами в цыганском цирке-шапито, вламываются на летающий "Титаник", сражаются с механическими монстрами и вообще нескучно проводят время.
Чувствуется,что Бенитез в первую очередь - художник. Нельзя сказать, что сюжет слишком оригинален, а диалоги живые. Все время есть небольшое ощущение, что ты видел что-то похоже в каком-то фильме категории Б вроде "Ван Хельсинка", а претендент на главгады вырисовывается в середине повествования довольно выпукло. С другой стороны - и фильмы категории Б могут быть увлекательны. К тому же викторианская чопорность диалогов придает им определенный шарм и помогает глубже погрузиться в атмосферу - даже ненавидящие друг друга противники перед схваткой и перестрелкой не забывают о безукоризненной вежливости, обращении на "Вы" и "сэр"/"леди".
А вот к художественной части не придерешься, даже если очень захочешь - нарисовано все просто изумительно и стильно. Диковинные механизмы, стимпанк-оружие и доспехи, викторианские наряды - все на высоте. Даже не являясь ярым фанатом жанра, получаешь огромное удовольствие от визуального пиршества. Единственное, что царапнуло - слишком явная порой фиксация на бюстах героинь, что, наверное, можно списать на условности жанра и времени, со всеми этими корсетами и декольте. Но когда начинаешь привыкать, что такая явная объективация постепенно отходит в прошлое, это немного бьет по глазам.
Кончается первый том небольшим клиффхангером. Автор уже выпустил второй том и работает над третьим, так что приключения Леди Механики продолжаются.

Это прекрасная история о приключениях у стимпанковом мире. Рисунок невероятный. Сюжет не менее хорош. Побольше бы таких классных историй

Stunning illustrations. The main plot isn't very innovative, but it is an enjoyable read nonetheless.

As someone of Romani descent, I appreciated the correct use of our name as well as the implication that Gypsy is indeed a slur. That alone makes me want to rate this comic higher.
In the writing industry, there is a saying: show, don't tell. They really needed to apply this here. Whilst I'm not afraid of reading when I pick up a graphic novel I also don't want blocks of text dominating a lot of the pages. If I want to read that much I'll just...well, read a dang book. There was an awful lot of talking explaining the world set up and I REALLY think that could have been scripted better. In some panels, the balloons were so much you could hardly see the artwork behind it. That's my biggest complaint with this comic. Several times I almost DNF'd it because it stilted the story for me.

Ok, so I read volume 0 last month, but in black and white because I got it for free on my Kindle, then I saw they actually had the series at my comic store and so I just bought vol 1 right then and there. That's how intrigued I was.
All the things I liked about vol 0 was still there. The artstyle, the characters, the world, but I got everything in color! It made for a whole new experience of the comic which I'm glad I got to experience.
Other than that, nothing much more to say. I like it and will be picking up the next volume when I'm at the comic store next time!

First things first, I would like everyone to take a moment and appreciate the cover art. It is stunning. The rest of the volume’s art holds up to this standard, I am very pleased to say. This will come as no surprise, after seeing the cover, but Lady Mechanika is a steampunk graphic novel set in a Victorian world full of fascinating devices and technology. In this world, people that are a blend of machine and organic aren’t called cyborgs; they’re called mechanika (Thus the main character’s name).
I really liked the concept for Lady Mechanika, but I’ll admit it took me a while to get fully invested in the plot (which is partly why it didn’t get a higher rating). The art style is beautiful, the design elements in the machines are stunning, and the plot is interesting. Despite all this I do find myself wishing for a bit more character development on the whole. Not just for Lady Mechanika, but for all the cast. I think this series truly has a lot of potential, and look forward to reading more of it.
It’s probably worth nothing that this graphic novel has a lot more writing in it than is standard; at least twice as much, if not more. So if you’re picking this up and expecting a nice quick read, you’ll be disappointed. If you’re looking for a series that’s more verbose and takes it’s time with world building, this is the series for you.
While I like the main character, I actually felt that the series truly shined with many of its supporting characters. The Romani Circus and her engineer were my particular favorites. Their personality was sprinkled throughout, and appeared to bring out a more human element from Lady Mechanika. As for the antagonists, I’m really curious to see more about them and see where everything leads us. I’ll have to pick up volume two shortly.

Great read albeit a little wordy and hard to follow in places. I really enjoyed this one and the art is a steampunk lovers dream *swoon*

Steampunk, people with mechanical parts, airships... Set in the British Empire, presumably in the Victorian Era.
Plot:
I found the plot pretty confusing at first. Also it felt as if I was missing part of the story from an epilogue or previous volume. I did not find the dialogues interesting and lost interest in the story fairly quickly. But that's on me, it wasn't really my thing.
Nice little cliffhanger at the end.
Artwork:
Nice page-sized panels at the beginning of every chapter. The colour scheme is pretty dark, to the point that I sometimes could not make out enough details for my liking. But generally nice.
The larger tableaus were a little fuzzy.
I liked the costumes of the female characters. Proportions / anatomy was well done, despite some oversized boobs. Especially the cover art reminded me of pinups.
Bottomline, it was ok, but did not grab me. Nice artwork. 3 mechanized stars.
