  • This is my first Virginia Woolf and I wonder if I should’ve started with one of her other works as the context of Orlando is very much a deviation from her style and an inside joke to Vita Sackville-West
  • So much of understanding this novel could be context
  • I will say I think the perspective on gender and sexuality was fascinating to read, there’s a lot to dissect with the fluidity similar to the timelines fluidity as well
  • The writing is purposeful and beautiful, poetic and definitely that stream of consciousness style I can see Woolf being known for- it is terribly dense as well and could very well be a case of I may enjoy it more if it was a guided sort of reading academically
  • And like all classics there seems  staggering hints of racism that- yes we can’t hold classics to modern standards but I was very caught off guard at how even within the first 10 pages it was…. not great
  • Still I would like to read more Woolf and perhaps return to Orlando more well studied on the context and used to Woolf’s style

I loved the idea of this book but I found it incredibly difficult to follow - perhaps just reading at the wrong time and in the wrong headspace.

"To put it in a nutshell, he was afflicted with a love of literature. It was the fatal nature of this disease to substitute a phantom for reality."

Enjoyed the second half way more than the first half. My favourite quote that genuinely made me laugh:

“Madam,” the man cried, leaping to the ground, “you’re hurt!”
“I’m dead, sir!” she replied.
A few minutes later, they became engaged
