Flying through this series because I just can't stop now. I am loving Anita's character progression and how she is developing. The basement scene was terrifying and I could picture the whole thing while reading. I don't want to say too much and spoil things. It's wonderful, loving it!

I think I found this the best one so far.
I love the Richard/Jean Claude/Anita relationship and I adore the idea of Anita being more one of the monsters each book, as opposed to the beginning where she sort of indiscriminatedly hatem them all.

On re-read, this installment had a lot more visceral on page rape than I ever remember being in the series. Urban fantasy in general has that as a theme but this was a lot. There's a bunch of meta things going on in this installment and we have a definite shift to focusing more on that than the monster of the week stuff, and a lot of important future players get introduced in this one. But ultimately it was so fast paced and things moved so quickly while not that much in the overall scheme of things happened, so I didn't enjoy it quite as much as previous installments.

Content Warnings: Blood/gore, body horror, rape, torture, death, gun violence, homophobia, fire injury, murder, sexual assault, sexism, and sexual situations.

When I originally read this I was more interested in all the police work than the interpersonal info/dramas but this read I'm more invested in all the interpersonal stuff lol

*Reread oct 2022*

I enjoyed this reread far more than every other time ive read it! I decided not to change any ratings on this reread but i think i didnt give this book nearly enough credit before. It actually deserves the 4 and the 5s. . .most of them would be 3.5-3.75 for me so far.

I loved the philosophical discussions and the basement scene was goddamn terrifying. 2 of my fave characters are introduced. Its just good
