“You may have noticed Aahz’s appraisals of a situation are usually far from reassuring. Someday I might get used to that, but in the meantime I’m learning to operate in a constant state of blind panic.”

This was the best one yet! The story was wacky and funny, but surprisingly full of emotion. We get to see Skeeve learning more about magic, himself, and how to handle tough situations. For a coming of age series, this novel was a big turning point for him.

Having Skeeve paired up with Tanda for the first bit of the novel was a fun change of pace and made for a good dynamic we get to see surprisingly little of in the other stories. Quigley’s return was unexpected and fun. I love that bumbling man, even if he isn’t quite on the heroes’ side.

There’s some funny commentary on war with the people and businesses of Jahk cashing in on the war with souvenirs. Speaking of, the actual plot of this one is quite a bit deeper than the past two. The stakes are personal, and we get some genuine emotion from almost every character involved. Most notably, we see Aahz is an emotionally vulnerable state, if only briefly.

As a minor note, there’s much more in the way of Skeeve addressing the reader directly and having asides or explaining things to us. This happened in the last couple of books, but it was more prominent in this one and made it feel much more personal. Overall, this was a fantastic addition to the series!

A very good series, that I would highly recommend, especially if you like your fantasy books to not take themselves too seriously.

This was another funny story. This story is about gambling and birthday present (for Oz). Love Gleep.

My notes for this one just read "Ugh. Trollop. The sexism is not fun." which I feel I should elaborate on here, but that sort of sums it up nicely. 'Trollop' being the female version of 'Troll' is funny to a very specific subsection of the human race, one to which I do not belong. Tanda was not the only issue; the characterisation of Massha as a grotesque sexual predator was also a slap in the face. There was also a plot, more or less, but that's less relevant.

Loved this third book in the series. loads of humour, some a little obscure, some more obvious, and plenty of fun all round. Looking forward to reading book #4.

Noah Michael Levine does a great job with the narration.
