My favourite book of the series!
The plot was fantastic and super interesting with a dive into the breadth of magic history. There was a good level of peril and some super spell-use too. Aaronovitch is very descriptive in his writing which has always made the fight sequences vivid and dynamic, and he continues with this instalment.
All the favourites at the Folly and beyond were involved with only a few new key names dropped in (the foxes made a great appearance too). I have really enjoyed Peter Grant and Sahra Guleed’s teamwork throughout the series and particularly loved reading the sections involving them interviewing people together.
Peter has completely stopped making weird comments about people which I appreciate enormously as they previously made the books awkward, and has also limited his media references to only a few well-chosen moments.
Above all, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith has made this series absolutely fantastic to listen to. His characterisation is brilliant - everyone is unique and instantly memorable. I have WHIZZED through this book because of his incredible reading and would suggest anyone who wants to get into the series listens to the audiobooks!

Nine books in and this is still one of my favorite series. I am late in reading this book because I hadn’t realized it came out a few years ago. And now I don’t have to wait very long until the next one.
I love the very short conversation Peter had with his mother when he was near the end of the case. His mom was right, of course. Without spoilers, that’s all I can say.
I thought that the birth scene was going to be rushed to make it fit in the last chapter. It wasn’t - it was very beautiful, and I felt there was enough room for that part of the story. I’d been waiting for that scene since the end of the last book!
