A very atmospheric and enjoyably dark read. Summoned by her cousin’s plea for help, Noemi heads into the middle of nowhere in the Mexican forest where a strange manor with a a dark past surrounding it, lies. Her cousin is mysteriously sick, the manor has a cloak of dampness and quiet to it. But also the house itself seems to be alive or at least imbued with those who have passed before. Noemi wants to help her cousin, wants to prove she’s capable of more than the frivolity her father thinks of her and feels she’s strong enough to do it. She is, but only because she also has strength in an unlikely ally in Francis, the seemingly weak one nephew.

I dug this a lot. I found Noemi to be believable in being stuck wanting to help but also wanting to leave. I liked Francis actually as he shakes off the derision his family treats him. And ultimately how it ends, how Noemi finds her way to freedom.

A Mexican reindition of Rebecca that is also a metaphor for colonization, sexualisation of Latinx people by oppressors and white supremacy. Gory content ahead but nonetheless a book that will be devoured.
