Ari has always been fascinated by the weather, so working as a TV meteorologist is like living the dream. Unfortunately for Ari, her boss, the legendary Torrance Hale, is too preoccupied to mentor her properly. Russel, the sports report seems to be the only one who understands how she feels.

Following a disastrous holiday party, Ari and Russell team up to solve their bosses’ relationship issues. Between secret gifts and double dates, they start nudging their bosses back together. But their well-meaning meddling backfires when the real chemistry builds between Ari and Russell.

Weather Girl was one of my most anticipated releases of 2022, given the sweet premise and knowing there would be a mental health aspect. To say my hopes were high would definitely be an understatement. And unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations.

What I like:
• the representation. This book has excellent representation of mental illness, plus size portrayal, single parent, and a Jewish main character.
• the unique jobs. I loved that Rachel used such unique jobs as the basis for the story. An added bonus that the idea of a romance between a weather girl and a sportscaster seems fitting.
• the cover. Probably one of my favourite covers of the year.

What I didn't like:
• the romance. I get the romance isn't meant to be the main focus, yet the chemistry between the two main characters didn't feel all that believable.
• underdeveloped plot points. Some aspects of the plot were just left unexplored, which didn't feel quite right, even though this book already tackles a lot.

At the end of the day this was quick read with a cute plot, yet could have been better. For me, there was just something missing or maybe it's the fact it tried to do too much opposed to focusing on developing several aspects more broadly. I'm still glad I read it for the living with function depression aspect alone.

"The people who love us the most have the power to hurt us the most, too."

"If anything could confirm that weather isn’t small talk, it’s this. Weather connects us. A shared experience, even when we aren’t in the same place."

I blazed through this one and it felt like a warm hug. Another one for the stack of “men in fiction are far better people than any men in real life.” Also a lovely portrayal of elements of Judaism, yet totally accessible for non-Jewish readers.

Content notes: parental abandonment, depression, anxiety/panic attacks, some scenes of explicit sexual content

Weather Girl was my first read by Rachel Lynn Solomon and certainly won't be my last! The Ex Talk has been on my TBR for so long and after reading Weather Girl, I have to move it up!

Ari has her dream job. She's wanted to be a meteorologist ever since she was a little girl. Russel is finally doing sports reporting on air. The only issue is, the work environment has become toxic. Their bosses, Torrance and Seth, used to be married to each other, and the in-office fighting between them is putting everyone on edge. Ari and Russel devise a plan to help Torrance and Seth fall back in love, but while doing so, Ari and Russel start to fall for each other...

This book was so charming and had such real characters! They didn't shy away from insecurity, depression, or anxiety. Rachel's writing brought up these serious topics but effortlessly mixed in humor and lightheartedness throughout the story.

There is not a universe in which I personally could not give this book 5 stars. Between the positive representation of someone with depression (someone who is actively seeking treatment for their depression, who knows that this is something they will probably live with forever, but still ends up happy) and the positive representation of a chubby lover (someone who knows they're fat and is self-conscious about it with new partners), there wasn't a way in which this book did not emotionally destroy me. I have never felt so seen by a book, so represented, and so exposed for the world to see. This was a beautiful and painful experience, and I have so many WONDERFUL highlighted quotes from this book.

Russell is my mountain man dream, Ari is the personification if masking, Elodie is me if I had discovered musical theater before I turned 15. I just..I could not possibly love this book more. From the author's note all the way through to the end, everything was perfect to me, and felt so real.
