This book hit me right in the feels and it hit hard. Rarely do I find myself staying up at night reading a book with tears streaming down my face, but boy oh boy, did this book do exactly that. I feel like I was hit with a truck of emotions but in the best of ways. Would 1000% recommend this book to everyone I know because it so delicately handles life, loss and what it means to find your love for people in the most unsuspecting of places.

What I Liked
  • The writing is so good. It almost reads like a poem, especially with the immense detail of every food item in this book.
  • The mother daughter relationship is messy, but so real and I found myself relating to some of the ways Michelle reacted with her mother, even though we come from such different backgrounds.
  • I liked how she would flashback to some of the hard years in high school, but not dwell on it as to not take the reader too far away from the present story that encapsulates a lot of Michelle’s message in this book.
  • I love how she wrote without holding anything back that grief is messy, cancer sucks, and family can be really hard sometimes.

Michelle captured the beauty and pain of trying to figure out adult relationships with a parent while supporting them through a terminal illness. I laughed. I cried. I cried some more. And absolutely loved this book.

I'm not crying, you are... Beautifully  and intimately written. I have to go call my mum now.

I’m still grappling the loss of my own mother and reading through Michelle’s experiences was incredibly cathartic for me.  It made me look at my life now and examine not just the relationship I had with me mother but the relationship I have with my own daughters and the impression I want to leave on them and about our own connections to food and how it really is something that binds us all together.

I’m so glad I finally picked this book up. Michelle Zauner tells her story in such a beautifully simple and frank way and then suddenly drops in a detail that guts you. I’m not sure it’s possible to read this book without getting emotional. The audiobook is read by the author and added to the emotional impact of the story as well. A tough read, but worth it.
