i heard a lot of good things about this book, sadly it didn't work for me. i'll be honest, the first half is pretty boring and the other half is just okay. and because i'm not that familiar with Korean food, i often just skim through every mention of it, which is quite a lot. overall, this book just wasn't for me, didn't resonate with me, just an okay book. i really want to like this, but... sorry.

This was not a bad book at all and I have nothing but empathy for everything Zauner went through in this memoir. I can't really explain why I struggled to connect with it - it was well-written and has clearly been very successful with most readers, which I'm glad about! I think for me, I prefer memoirs that recount a very unusual experience or provide a very new perspective on things, whereas as difficult as the loss of a loved one is, and as much as I wish nobody ever had to go through it, the emotions and processes Zauner describes going through make perfect, obvious sense. That doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend it, or that I think Zauner shouldn't have bothered writing it, or that I think she owes anyone a more dramatic story. But it does mean I don't think this book was aimed at me.

A beautiful, heartbreaking memoir on the illness and loss of Michelle’s mother, intricately woven with her relationship with Korean food and  her own identity, and how all these three things combine to become one. I listened to this as an audiobook and I’m sure more than one person has seen me waiting at a red light ugly sobbing over my steering wheel.
