This is probably the dumbest thing I’ll read all year

At nearly 600 pages, this was an intimidating read for a casual reader (aka, me). And the first 150 pages are a little bit of a slow trudge as the characters are developed, the scene is set, and the drama begins to unfold. This metafictional book within a book was full of detailed, intricate plot threads that seemingly tightened over the course of the story which each chapter introducing new questions and potential theories that lead to an absolutely incredible final few chapters as the mysteries resolved and we discovered "whodunnit". This was simply a masterpiece of writing and I'm glad I persevered beyond the dense and confusing first 150 pages as the ending was a worthy reward.

Wow. This book is not like anything I’ve read before. So many threads – no telling where they’ll lead. Never where you think, for sure. It’s nearly 600 pages, but the payoff is worth it.

It’s got a little bit of everything. Story inside a story. Unrequited love. Backstabbing businessmen in a struggle for power and money. Isolated closed-circle whodunnit. A cold case to unravel.

Nobody is who they seem to be. Who is Scarlett? Who is Sinior Tarnogol? The Enigma of Room 622 will keep you guessing.

It seems oddly anachronistic at times. I kept double-checking dates. Olga and her daughters Irina and Anastasia in particular. They lived by the philosophy that marrying well was a woman’s only option.

The author is Swiss, and the book was originally written in French. The translation to English is flawless, but it still has the undefinable feel of a translated novel.

I received this Advanced Reader Copy of The Enigma of Room 622 from NetGalley and HarperVia in exchange for an honest review.

Read the first half, listened to the second half. Enjoyed this more in audiobook format. Not a fave. This felt unnecessarily long & I was a bit bored off and on.

After reading the truth about the Harry Quebert affair I was really looking forward to this book. It is a similar layout with an author investigating a mystery, with flashbacks to the past included. All in all I did enjoy the book although I did feel that it dragged a little bit.

Once the flashback portion of the story was the forefront of the book things really started to pick up, although when I thought I must be near the end of the mystery, I found I was onlt halfway through the book.

I did enjoy the twists and reveals at the end however, and it was quite fun trying to guess who exactly was murdered in room 622. Definitely kept me guessing throughout!

I found the first part of the book very slow, but I liked the ending.
