Liked the way the story was laid out through time but the framing narrative was very stupid- all of the Bernard stuff felt unnecessary (sorry Bernard).

If you’re really looking for a new murder mystery who-dunnit where you cannot predict the ending at all, this is the book for you. Dare I say, this may be my favorite murder mystery ever…? Although I didn’t find the main character, Macaire, very likeable that was outweighed by all the other characters and insertion of the author in the story. Such a unique read with great storytelling and had me guessing until literally the last page.

I'm giving this 3 1/2 stars, and would have given it 4 if it hadn't been for the interminable middle section. The last third of the book was fantastic and the first third was quite good too, but the middle bit just got much, much too deep into everyone's backstory and into the business of running a bank, which I just didn't care about at all.

I don't know if the publisher, Bernard, represented a real person in the real author's life, but that's the only excuse I can think of for including the character because he didn't add anything to the story, even though our fictional author brought him up again and again. Removing all mention of Bernard would have been a good way to reduce the length of the book somewhat, so I have to imagine that he remained for some sentimental reason rather than to further the story.

The audiobook ran 16 hours, and I can't think of any way to justify that length. Had it been carved down to half as long, it would've been twice as good and I would no doubt be looking forward to reading more by this author, but as it is I don't think I'll pursue that.
