one of my favourite books of all time. bought the paperback edition mostly just as an opportunity to reread, and so i can have both an annotated copy and a plain one.

i have read this book three times now, but this time around i definitely read it with a different perspective having gone through some of the worst mental health struggles of my life, earlier this year. this book has helped, and continues to help me, so much, and i would truly recommend it to everyone regardless of their experience with their own mental health. i find it so easy to read and love the way it’s formatted.

i know my love for dan makes me incredibly biased in my perspective but i truly do love this book. the new chapters in this edition really resonated and i will definitely be referring back to them if and when i need to. i look forward to meeting dan for a second time next year.

Kind of an uneven mess at points, but it has some good pointers and I enjoyed some of the wry/dark humor Dan is known for. It helped make a topic that can sometimes be eyeroll-y and condescending more palatable and relatable, especially to his target audience/demographic. Could have used a bit more editing, though.

Truly just not for me. I am grateful to be at a point in my life where I have heard and applied most of this advice. I’m glad the book exists for the target audience; I am not the target audience. By the way, Daniel, punctuation works differently in the written word than it does in visual form.

A really interesting, informative and entertaining read. Sure, none of it is particularly groundbreaking or advanced, but it’s perfect for people who don’t know a lot about psychology and/or don’t want to wade through tons of information to get to the main points. I like the way the book is organised, so that you can just flip to whatever section is suitable depending on where you are with your mental health in the moment. Dan’s narration is engaging and still somewhat lighthearted despite the subject matter, which I think provides a good balance - you don’t want to get depressed from reading a book that’s meant to help you with depression.  And I also love the fact that all the information has been fact-checked by an actual psychologist who specialises in mental health so you know it’s pretty reliable. I’m sure I’ll be employing several of these exercises in the future.
