Unfortunately, I cannot see what its fans and the Booker Prize saw in this book. While the language is evocative, Roy really overused repetition as a literary device. And the attempt to have a childish narrator during the childhood time period personally did not work and created a confused narrative voice. The hopping time periods and the social commentary was very interesting. But I did not find any of fhe characters compelling enough to follow through.

Additionally, the way fat and disabled bodies were described were othering and deeply cruel. The fact that two characters were fat was constantly mentioned alongside their moral and personality failings.

The prose was gorgeous and had a lot of really creative and visceral motifs but
WHY DID IT END IN TWINCESSSSST UGHHHHHHHH
also in general it was just really dark with a lot of disgusting visuals which were powerful but very difficult to listen to, so i would be careful if you are considering reading this book. read trigger warnings!!

Beautifully written. Hard to read at times with the subject matter. I found it tricky to follow and get the gist at points, as the narrative switches perspectives and time frames a lot. But things generally became a bit clearer towards the end as the timelines merged - and this actually reflects that clarity that comes to the characters in adulthood in comparison to their childhood understanding.
