This series is really shaping up to be something special. I think the first book works better as a cohesive story, and this one feels like setup for a larger narrative, and not as cohesive as a stand alone book, but it was still an enjoyable read.

It suffers from pacing issues and is very boring and plot laden at times. The romance of this book is not as good as the first one, but that’s ok, because not every book has to be romantic. 

I liked getting to know the characters a little more. I liked the reveal at the end, but honestly, it just makes me mad that we had to spend so much time being bait-and-switched by the author to in the name of worldbuilding rather than start in the faerie realm and have the actual story play out! 

Still!

I’m looking forward to book three!

I did cry over a lot of this book, as SJM is able to make me care about her characters despite my misgivings. I felt very jerked around by this story, both plot and character development wise, but ultimately understand what people are saying about the story getting better as it progresses. However, her treatment of her one character of color in this book is really difficult to support and definitely needs to be highlighted.

What a surprise. I  enjoyed this. And was really moved by the brief twist. Poignant sadness. The romance midway was charming. It left me wanting more and to chase the next book in this series.

Splendid, perfect, marvelous, a bunch more adjectives. I was already enjoying this series but this is definitely the one that truly hooked me.
