This is the type of book and style I would expect from SJM after reading ACOTAR and Crescent City.
Solid reads with decent plot and pacing. I can tell something good is brewing.

Crown of Midnight is markedly better than Throne of Glass, develops the three major characters in considerably more depth, and better establishes the longer investment of the narrative series.

That said, the treatment of the one character of color that was major in Throne of Glass is upsetting. Maas’ casts aren’t particularly diverse to begin with, and this book’s fridging of the most prominent (and visible) character of color so far does not bode well for future characters of color, if they’re introduced at all.
