Another fabulous short in this series. The two main characters are new, but Tenrael and Charles Grimes reappear many years after Corruption. The new characters are Marek, a 300 year old vampire, and Clay White, a disgraced former agent of the Bureau of Transpecies Affairs.

What transpires is a short murder mystery with an unexpected ending. I do hope to see more of these two in subsequent books in the series.

liked it less than the first book, even if the premise was interesting ...

Great supernatural story.

I love that this short stories are built on each other. I was glad to see the previous MCs here, and I hope the next book will constant everyone so far. I enjoyed this a lot, can’t wait where are we going next!

My goodness, but Kim Fielding excels at creating atmosphere in her writing. The first Bureau novella ([b:Corruption|35305623|Corruption (Bureau, #1)|Kim Fielding|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1496628213s/35305623.jpg|56675146]) put the reader in the heart of Kansas during the Dust Bowl years. With Clay White we're in the present time, in gritty downtown San Francisco - the clubs, the alleys, the vacant storefronts.

I really liked this story for what is stated and what is unstated. There are some details of the characters' past which are hinted at, but aren't laid out in long exposition (which is good, given this is also a novella!). We get enough to understand the characters and their motivations, and that's enough. I also love when a character's beliefs are challenged and they are forced to rethink things they had always taken as facts. How they come to grips with this is a big part of making a character come alive for me.

Although I suppose that this story could be read by itself, but given the recurrences in theme and characters you'd really be best served if you read Corruption first. Taken together these are both excellent reading. I hope that we'll hear more from Fielding's Bureau universe!

Just as good as the first one! Clay and Marek’s connection wasn’t quite as strong as Charles and Tenrael’s, in my opinion, but the engaging plot balanced it out.

So good. So short. Need more!
And to think I was hesitant to read Kim Fielding because of some of her corny cover art. Bones sounds right up my alley but I can't stand the book covers, hahaha! Guess I'll be reading that next. I loved her writing. You have to read Corruption before this one, I mean you really don't have to, but you want to. Go now. Read!

A little over 3.5 stars for me. Even better than the first story. It was lovely to see Ten and Charles make an appearance.

Good, best read second, not first.

Although Clay reads pretty sparse on the page, I see why the author chose to follow his part of this tale. I'd have hesitated to read another in this world had Clay's been first, but this way, I will read more as they come out. It's an intriguing world.
