Nikolai is hands down the best character in this series now, I still love the Darkling though. This book does have middle book syndrome but still was one that makes you rush to read. I love the amounts of proposals Alina gets and honestly I like the other pairings as opposed to the main couple. I can not wait to start with the final book in the series.

Nikolai was by far the best part of this book as I found Alina and Mal rather annoying in this. Other great additions were Toyla and Tamar, I liked the first park of the book that was set at the true sea but when they arrived back at the little palace if found the pacing rather slow for me but I think that was to do with Alinas actions.
Overall I did enjoy this book and I am excited to read the next one, I do however wish that more darkling was included as I find him a very interesting character. I know this book was set in Alinas POV but I would love to have seen what happened with the Darkling and his grisha between the true sea and getting to Os Alta - though I don’t want too much detail on what happened to Genya!

Wow! I thought I'd enjoyed the first book but this one was so much better! The characters felt like they were better developed and I loved seeing Alina develop into a leader and embrace her role especially as she grappled with the darkness
The plot kept me interested the whole way through even though most of the action happened in the last few chapters similar to the first book. I loved Nikolai and some of the other new characters and I hope they are just as ingrained in the final book which I will be starting straight away lol.

Much better then first book for two reasons.
First reason: Nikolai Lantsov, Major of the Twenty-Second Regiment, Soldier of the King’s Army, Grand Duke of Udova, and second son to His Most Royal Majesty, King Alexander the Third, Ruler of the Double Eagle Throne, may his life and reign be long. I love him, manipulator with good heart, thank you sir for saving this series. Mal was right when he called him Prince Perfect.
Second reason: There isn't much for Darkling in this book, everyone with brain cheered. Every sentence from his mouth is super annoying or disgusting: “Because every day we don’t find the sea whip, I’ll peel away a piece of her skin. Slowly. Then Ivan will heal her, and the next day, we’ll do it all over again.”
Like Alina is potato, then there is him pretending to be Mal to kiss her and what he did to Genya, yes he deserves to die twice.
Also blaming Alina for stuff he does: “I’ve waged the war you forced me to, Alina,” said the Darkling. “If you hadn’t run from me, the Second Army would still be intact. All those Grisha would still be alive.
Crusty old man you did that but moving on.
Alina and Mal are both seventeen and insecure what do you'll want for them. It's clear they both care about each other and they fit together.
Overall Nikolai ilysm.

I think I am only about 80 pages in and I DNFed. It was boring and angsty, I didn't really love the first one but this one just got more and more annoying. I don't care about the characters and I do not want to pick this book up again ever so I am officially calling it.

This was just too hard going. There were moments when I was drawn in and interested, but I really just wanted it to be over. I think the main issue is I dislike all the characters. The romance is boring, and I don't like any of the potential guys. It is repetitive, and although I feel a twinge in wanting to know how it ends. I don't care enough to waste a week finding out.
