There may have been things lost in translation here. While I often forget that Tender is the Flesh was translated, I found that quirks of wording pulled me out of this. I think it was the right length although flowing between perspectives made it harder to follow st times.

I enjoyed the writing style and some of the monologues (even though the thought processes didn’t make sense for six year olds), but that’s about where my enjoyment ends. I read the reviews on this and knew what I was getting into, but this really is the most dismal book imaginable.

So I wanted to read this because I heard it billed as Lord of the Flies but with six-year-olds. That's sort of what it is, but instead of factions with some bullies and some victims, it mostly has one psychopathic kid and a series of deadly misfortunes that can happen to scared kids when they're alone in the woods.

It has a moral of life being messy, not having a "happy ending" or a "moral" or "theme", that sometimes bad things just happen and there isn't always hope to be gleaned from a terrible situation.

Overall, it's a good novella - I breezed through it in one night - but don't look here for any warm and fuzzies.

I don't generally get a physical reaction from reading, but the last 10% or so had me feeling nauseous. It's time for a light, fluffy palate cleanser.

Having taught first grade, the kids were completely unrealistic. Their thoughts and actions took me out of the story a bit.

The calm narrator of the audiobook made this even more unsettling.  I highly recommend listening to this one.
