This book (or these short stories) are unbelievably charming. I love the world, I love the characters, I love the prose.

I want this solely for the new stories.

An excellent premise (based on historical anecdote) that gets nearly completely squandered in a series of monologue and characters that are not nearly as interesting as the author imagines. And I understand perhaps why there are no physical descriptions of Hero, but it leaves that particular character merely a cypher that never feels particularly fleshed out. Also it’s ridiculous that everyone in the book has knives strapped all over their bodies.

I’d read other stories by other authors set in a flooded America with hippos though, I just hope they do some research into hippos because there’s not a single moment where a hippo uses it’s tail like a demented helicopter to fling feces willy-nilly.

This is the type of alternative history I needed in my life! Cowboys with hippos?! Yes please! I absolutely loved the characters, the "caper," the world, the found family, etc. My one complaint was how I couldn't quite get a read on some of the friendships and bonds, but the two short stories at the end gave me what I needed! Now I need a third novella!

I liked the premise, but, even for a novella, the plot felt rushed.

These books are probably some of the most unique and entertaining I’ve ever read. The premise is extremely unique and captivating. The characters in this story are diverse, both racially and sexually. The romances do not feel forced, the characters and their relationships are developed with care over time at a healthy pace. I personally became quite invested in their well-being, entranced by the story as I listened during my daily commute. I would highly recommend the audiobook, which can be found for free on the Libby app.
