If this had been the first book in the series I think I would have rated it higher but after reading the first book and comparing them, this one just didn't stack up the same. I really loved the character growth and this is one of the better examples of character growth I've read but I just didn't really care too much about Calder as a character because of how the first book characterizes him, even with the growth. The kids feel like actual characters and not just a roadblock or easy background tension which was really nice. I like the dynamic of Calder and Felix but it just wasn't quite as investing as the first one was for me.

Sink or Swim is the sequel to Sailor Proof, following Calder as he realizes what he really wants in life. The basic plot is contrived and relies heavily on coincidences, but the characters pull it off beautifully.
I've had problems with sequels published by Carina Adores, with the sequel not being anything like the first book, which made me hesitate. I thoroughly enjoyed Sailor Proof, but was a little leery based on previous experience with the publisher. However, I'm glad I took the leap and read the book, because it enjoyed it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Carina Adores for the free eARC!
Updated: 2022-09-23: I reread Sink or Swim, after reading Sailor Proof and I thoroughly enjoyed it! While the plot is still heavily reliant on coincidences and there's about three tropes a page, Albert pulls it off beautifully, in a funny, lighthearted yet heartfelt look at who one really is and what really matters in life.
