¡Amo a Rachel!

“When you live in an insane world, you have to hold on to the little things.”

A slightly more slice-of-life story that honestly makes me a bit worried about how this series is going to last for 40 more books.

I still had a fun time, but it’s definitely already lacking the punch of the initial run of books.

Apparently you can be allergic to animal dna, and when that happens, you lose control of your morphing and eventually Thing birth the dna you're allergic to as a full grown creature from your own body. If you are unlucky enough to be a hormonal teenager, it also triggers with extreme emotions, like, say, a crush on an actor who ends up being a willing and active collaborator for power and safety. And then you end up crushing your home when you turn into a clumsy elephant thinking about him, or morphing between animals without passing back to human form, or almost morphing live on television. Rachel has big baby dyke energy, especially with Cassie.

This is probably more of a 4 but it’s the pure bonkers zany I needed. I wish the “problem” stuck around a little longer for Rachel though.

This is the worst one yet. I think this is the last one I'm reading. I can't get over how stupid these kids are and how they keep making the same mistakes over and over again.

The allergy concept is bizarre and could make for interesting worldbuilding except that I doubt it'll come up again. The rest of this is just plain bad--the teenage heartthrob and shallow pastiche of middle school girlhood, reversion to bad decision making and poor communication, and humorous excess of the climax are all tiresome. I disliked this as a kid and stand by that now. It's a bad book, and the first that's been a slog to read.
