This was my first experience (I think) with Africanjujuism specifically (a term coined by Nnedi Okorafor to describe a fantasy subgenre that "respectfully acknowledges the seamless blend of true existing African spiritualities and cosmologies with the imaginative" (page 129)) and I had a great time reading this.
We follow Chioma while she's visiting her grandmother and great-aunt in their village in rural south-east Nigeria (she's from Chicago). One night during a storm she opens the door to find a boy with his brain exposed... and from there the story starts.
The art and visuals to describe what was happening to Chioma were deeply unsettling and effective as hell. I felt her mounting panic and fear as strange things began to happen and the horrors that she ended up going through. There was so much detail on every page and the artists used colour and format so well.
I'd love for them to adapt more of Okorafor's work in graphic novels because I think her stories really lend themselves to this medium.
Definitely recommend!
