So many characters, plot lines and topics that are touched upon and then just dropped like a hot potato without ever being resolved or treated with the required depth. Additionally, the ending should have just been open in my opinion for the readers to make up their minds and challenge their own biases as the characters have to.
I also now know way more about bees and beekeeping than I ever imagined. However, the purpose of all this information for the book is still not clear to me. At best, the bees served as a blunt metaphor for the unfolding plot, but in most cases it did nothing for the story since everything was spelled out anyway. If everything bee related was deleted from the book, it would be at least 100 pages shorter and neither plot nor character development would suffer.
Lastly, this would have been a dnf for me, but am reading for a book club, so had to push through.

Mad Honey is a great read for someone who wants to explore the idea of self criticism and recognition of privilege without reading something as confronting as CRT books. The story is well paced and provides the opportunity for women to be the focus in a genre which usually focuses on men.
This novel also was incredibly well written in regards to transgender Identity and the experiences/questions that transgender people ask themselves.
Overall not the best book in the world which will change your life, but a great read well worth your time.

Heavy read. I’m glad I got the exposure even if some of the writing choices I didnt like. The twist just super floored me. It was excellently done. That being said,
it drove me crazy that Asher was a suspect because his fingerprints were in her room. No, duh. And then there’s all the talk of manslaughter vs murder but when best friend reveals she was involved everyone’s like “meh. Oh well.” Really did not like that. It was too unbelievable and ridiculous.

A competent and well-written murder mystery/courtroom drama with consistent themes and characters you can't help caring about. The organization of the chapters and perspective definitely had me going back and forth because the timeline was a bit confusing. Otherwise, if you like murder mysteries, I'd say this book is for you.
