Second time DNF. I thought I'd give this another try and pushed through the blatant fat shaming that grossed me out enough to DNF last year. But it didn't get any better beyond what I'd read before. The writing is frankly cringe, imprecise, and feels written by and for a teenage boy. Scenes are detailed with choppy, incomplete sentences with made up words like "smeary". Some of the dialogue feels modern and from our world, one of my biggest pet peeves in fantasy writing. There was a stretch of several pages in which the dialogue consisted only of single words or noises being hollered, like "Aargh", "Damn", and "Back". If you're describing the action, these words aren't needed. This just feels so juvenile and poorly done. I can't tell if this is supposed to be satire or funny or what...having just read Guards! Guards!, The Blade Itself almost feels like a cheap knockoff of that book, minus the heart, actually funny jokes, and any sort of interesting or suspenseful plot (one character is told by some spirits to find a wizard, another is told to take down a guild leader, which he easily does in the next scene). I guess if you like snarky, carbon copy male fantasy characters, gratuitous violence, and predictable action scenes/character interactions that don't tread new ground, you might like this. Otherwise, I don't see the appeal. It may have more to offer but the initial chapters were just too cringe to make me interested in reading more.

She starts slow, but stick with her and shell blow your brains out. All three books are a must

A bit sad that I didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would. Will read the next book to fully determine how I feel about it.

The Blade Itself...
Can't speak more highly on a first book of a trilogy more than this one. I was entertain through every conversation that was presented, I also can picture the fights so clear in my mind from the description that was given on the page. I was in no hurry to jump into this trilogy but after reading this book, I'm in a sprint to finish the rest. 4.3/5 stars
