I can't say I'd have gone for this without being given it by a pretty girl, but that's not to say it wasn't worth the time. I found that, as my life gets more defined by and my thoughts tend so often now toward romance, it's not unhelpful to have a cache of an essayist's beautiful prose in your back pocket. Plus, it encouraged me to call playlists mixtapes. Pretty cool shit, even if I haven't heard of any but six of the bands

Minor: Misogyny
Some of the ways that Sheffield commented on women (or about women) left a lot to be desired for me. There were many instances where he reduced women to all being the same, liking all of the same thing, regarded certain likes or interests as particularly "feminine," and had a joke about carnally loving his iPod because it wouldn't whine about its hair being messed up from sex. It's certainly not the worst book I've read in terms of misogyny, but it is certainly in there and I'd have personally appreciated a warning before reading it. Then I'd have been prepared for how much eyerolling I did.
