It’s kind of disgusting that this book is deemed as such an important piece of fiction. I don’t care how beautiful Nabokov’s prose is, it doesn’t change the fact that this is just hundreds of pages of a pedophile’s lusting after a child. There are so many other novels out there that just as (if not more) beautifully written as Lolita but don’t make you feel like you need to take a shower after reading it. Sorry I can’t bring myself to feel sympathy for a pedophile. Reading this was a waste of my time.

An absolutely wonderfully constructed book with an absolutely vile plot. Along the way, the book touches on mirrors, masks, art, empathy, and breaking away from solipsism. I had to put down the book more than a couple times out of disgust, but it was well worth the read. After finishing the book, I was left in a curious daze pondering the meaning and depth of human relationships. The few times true sentiment breaks through the over-the-top narration, it hits one like a car crash. I believe this is the sort of book which (and Nabokov probably would have despised this type of comment) can, if the reader is receptive, change one's view of the world and bring one to become a better person. Certainly it's one to which my thoughts will return again and again.

And what prose, what wonderful commentary on the US! The book still rings true today (poor Irving!).

P.S. Please don't put a picture of a girl on the book cover. Nabokov emphatically disapproved. A picture of an American landscape would much better suit the book.

(My earlier review doesn't seem to have saved, so I typed it up again.)

Shaking my head in disgust and disapproval so everyone in the coffee shop knows I am reading this in an educated, critical thinker way.

Humbert Humbert rot in piss!

It took me a while to get into this, but after the half-way point I really wanted to know what led to Humbert Humbert's downfall. I know this is crazy, but Humbert Humbert is fascinating. Perhaps because his character is so deeply and remarkably written, but also because he is an enigma. I listened to this performed by Jeremy Irons, which was stellar. A+
