This is a slow-paced, lengthy book but it was worth getting through to the end. I enjoyed seeing how neurodiverse Ox fit in and found companionship with a family of werewolves, as well as with a vehicle repair shop full of delightful side characters (who I 100% adore). Everything with Ox and Joe took so long that by the end I wasn’t really rooting for them. I would be happy either way. I’ll definitely read the next book eventually.

What a unique and beautiful read this was. I had high hopes after reading HITCS, and Klune did not disappoint. This book reads flashes of thoughts, memories, and feelings. In addition to being extremely lyrical and poetic, the way this book was crafted often had me adopting the narrator’s emotions as my own. I was extremely invested in these characters and this family for the entire book, which really emphasized the experiences of grief, despair, and forgiveness that are explored and championed in this book. Very excited to read the next books!

It started out strong, but then began to get super depressing and I just couldn't get past the weirdness of the relationships going on. I don't care how strong the trauma bonding, nothing can make the fact that the two main characters were basically mated when one was 10 and the other 16, ok for me. I also didn't like how touchy-feely the younger kid's family was with the older kid. It made me uncomfortable, and nothing that happened really made up for it. It also bothered me how few females there were in it- it seemed unbalanced, especially after one of them died.

Definitely one of my favourite fantasy books from this year. The writing style took a little getting used to, as it was different to what I've read in the past, at no time was it difficult to understand, just different.

TJ Klune delved into a lot of sensitive topics throughout this book, but at no point did it feel forced or strained, and the subject matter was handled very well. I definitely want to read the rest of the series. TJ definitely knows how to make us feel pathos and my heart was constantly being wrenched by the two MCs.
