queer fantasy romance, twilight vibes but only the werewolves, really freakin long

i think this is TJ klune best writing, his other stand alone books were cute but i felt like the characters voices blended together and didn’t feel authentic.

this book is told from Ox’s perspective, a teen boy who isn’t particularly good at anything, raised by his single mom. he lives in a tiny town in a house in the woods and works as a mechanic before he a mysterious family moves in at the empty house at the end of the road.

similar to twilight, but gay. Ox has a lot of similarities to bella. but instead of vampires it’s werewolf’s.

problems:
-book is realllly longggg
-There’s an alpha beta omega thing going on which is not really my vibe but it never got too sexual or weird in my opinion.
-The relationship is also a minor/adult relationship ??sorta kinda? and that also makes me 🚩🚩🚩

There’s too consistant themes throughout the book that i thought was sorta random. It’s mentioned a few times that “every monster you can imagine is real” but then they only “monster” we meet is werewolves and unhinged werewolves. Perhaps the next book will have other creatures.
Also there’s a theme about dreaming throughout the book. With Ox struggling to realize if he’s awake or asleep. Which could have been interesting but I felt that it wasn’t set up particularly well since he is never dreaming. He just says things like ‘it’s hard to tell between dreams and reality’ all the time but there’s never a dream sequence. I think it would have been more interesting if a few dream sequences were worked in to make Ix an unreliable narrator and make the reader question if it’s a dream or not.

Overall i enjoyed it, the characters were cute and the plot was drAmaTiC but it definitely is on the verge of some big issues. Also I thought it was a YA book but it is def not (lots of cursing and also sex).
