This is just the book I've been needing---delves into matters that have been weighing heavy on my mind (the circumstances, attitudes and philosophies leading up to, and the consequences of, emigration). The premise of this novella struck a deep chord, and although it doesn't provide any answers to my questions it does offer considerable insight, and there's much mulling over for me to do. Kundera had already jumped to #1 on my author list with The Unbearable Lightness of Being; this book just cemented his spot further.

Even as I flick to the last pages of the book, I know that if I hadn't finished the book, it still wouldn't make a difference. When I read this book I feel like I'm being forced to witness the lives of people whom I have absolutely no care for. I feel no sympathy towards their supposedly sympathetic situation. Ironically last night my mom asked me if I wanted to go to Prague. I almost winced. I need to find a way to cleanse this image of Prague that has been tainted by this book.
