I don’t think I remember the original adventures of Huckleberry but I appreciated the storytelling from Jim’s perspective. This is a dark time in our history, the endurance and perseverance showcased here is admirable. There were moments of brightness in the book, interactions between Jim and Huck, and Norman, all on this journey to return and free his wife and daughter. Jim kept hiding the fact that he was educated, slipping here and there in the way he spoke - that really broke my heart.

A rec from NPR.  A telling of the adventures of Huck Finn from Jim’s view..sort of.  It has been awhile since I read the classic, but this did bring back some memories.   I enjoyed the story and appreciate the perspective.

Have you ever wondered about Jim, the enslaved man who Huckleberry Finn rode with down the river in the classic novel? This retelling reveals the true stakes of Huck’s boyhood adventure and James’s quest for freedom and family.

Do not miss the Acknowledgments: “Finally, a nod to Mark Twain. His humor and humanity affected me long before I became a writer. Heaven for the climate; hell for my long-awaited lunch with Mark Twain.” That says it all?  What an amazing , incredible, beautiful, wonderful, brilliant novel.  He does the impossible, giving absolute agency, strength, 3-dimensional life, power, and dignity to Twain’s character.  “Jim” is now free….as James has always been.
