This is definitely something where, I can tell it's very good for the kind of thing that it is, but I don't love the kind of thing it is? I did really enjoy the detailed fashion analysis and the way it leveraged "feminine" skills and observations into good spy work...I just generally am not a big fan of like historical fiction/Regency romance/comedy of manners/whatever? Which I know a lot of people are fans of those things! So if you love those things I think you'll definitely love this book, and I appreciated its craft and characters and liked it just fine.
Also I'm a little confused by its YA designation--I feel like it would make more sense as a new adult book? It's not very sexy or anything but the characters and their concerns seemed more adult? I guess that's kind of often the case with YA historical fiction though, since, you know, changing definitions of "teenager" etc

This was one of the best regency books I have ever read. It takes a great twist on the normal standers and was incredibly well written but had a sense of classic flare to it. I recommend if you want a book with relate,e charecters and Just something like a well written classic.

It reads like a Regency spoof and is laughable but I'm not sure that's the intention. DNF

Absolutely delightful regency style novel with a competent and sympathetic heroine and many twists and turns. The magic is woven seamlessly

4.5 stars. As an historical mystery this would be a good book. But the fantasy/magic piece really added a nice layer to this for me. It kept the story from feeling familiar or predictable. Loved the main characters. I would definitely read more of these.

This was so cute and fun! I honestly could not put it down. The mystery was interesting, but the one clue they had completely gave it away. The characters were wonderful, but at times it felt like Annis was overshadowed by the other characters. I absolutely adored the setting, and I loved the addition of magic.

Cute! It’s no Sorcery and Cecelia, nor is it brilliantly written, but it’s fun. Miss Annis annoyed me a bit at first with her complete naivety, and all of the other clues she was missing. But, once I got over that, I was able to enjoy the book and the story itself.
I didn’t notice until the Author’s Note either, but Kelly Jones included characters from other more recent Regency novels! Such a clever and fun detail! As I’ve read many other Regency novels, I knew several of the books she had pulled characters from. Unfortunately, there was really only one name that sounded vaguely familiar while I was reading this book. But either way, it could make for a fun scavenger hunt for anyone else who reads it.

This was a really fun historical fantasy mystery romp--maybe for Gail Carriger fans, though there is less of a focus on romance. It's about a young girl who discovers that her father--a spy for England in Regency times--has been murdered, and determines to become a spy herself and avenge him. Luckily she has magical sewing glamour powers and a talented maid on hand to help in her quest! Jones does a good job looking at the precarious financial situations of women in this period, and if the mystery is not super well developed, it is still just a super enjoyable read. A-.
