Jordan starts at a new private school that consists of mostly white students and teachers, he is one of the few black students and he starts to notice all the micro aggressions and the out right racism he and the other black students are treated with.

While dealing with important and heavy topics this book is very well balanced, there are so many funny moments too and they help make it feel so lighthearted and comforting to read.

It’s a really great read for Middle Grade level, but I’d recommend it to anyone honestly. This was such a good book and the narration was awesome!!  All the narrators really brought the characters voices to life.

This book was great and the characters were endearing. I loved the journey he went on to start this new chapter in his life.

New Kid was a great read that I had put off for too long.  Jerry Craft does a good job in showing different kinds of racist microaggressions, stereotypes, and acts of racism (e.g. the teacher never learning Drew's name) that BIPOC experience that is accessible to young readers.  This book feels like a slice-of-life, like there isn't a major plotline, but I enjoyed the character development.

I'm looking forward to reading the sequel!

Great read! Very age appropriate and a great way to open dialogue for topics like these — racism and classism. I also love books that talk/mention other books.

This was a great read! It covered so many topics seamlessly, from microaggressions to colorism to classism, and all in a way that would connect with younger readers. The art style is more comic-like than illustration-like, which isn’t my preference but I do think Craft used the artwork to help tell the story well.
