I picked this book up purely because of a New Yorker article centering around the first story, "Car Crash While Hitchhiking." Read in one sitting, incredibly raw.

Although a difficult read at times due to the heavy subject matter, I quite enjoyed this little book. It is a series of vignettes seen through a drug addled haze. My favorite story by far was "Emergency," a strange and quietly disarming story. It's also the funniest one in the collection. "Jesus' Son" was my first foray into Johnson's work, and now I'd like to read more by him.

This is like hearing an old man at the bar tell rambling stories about his life, unaware of how much pain he's gone through, and how sad many of his stories are. It's sad without being tense or hopeless. A bit chaotic, a bit haphazard, but all connected.
