Бэтмен: Черное зеркало, by Scott Snyder

Dick Grayson is Batman as Bruce Wayne is off somewhere else. Gordon's son, Dick Grayson's parents' murderer's daughter and a lot more loose and not so loose ends get tightened in this series by Snyder. That Gotham inhabitants and technically all humans are inherently evil and hence the continuous emergence of villains takes you down a dark trip. One of the better written Batman universes with multiple shades of grey.

Honestly, I don't know how to rate this. It was a fantastically written story. I was legitimately surprised and itwas drawn really well. But it was so dark. I have heard that it was a darker story, but it almost felt too dark. I realize that the subject matter simply is dark, but I find it hard to say that I "liked" something that was so twisted, regardless of how it turned out. It's the kind of story that I finished at midnight and need to read something else before bed to keep myself from having nightmares. It was GOOD, I just don't know if I can use ENJOYABLE, for my own tastes at least.

A real twister. But there have been several such graphic novels. The main antagonist is a new one though.

A truly spectacular graphic novel. I'm still not totally sure how I feel about Dick Grayson as Batman, but I love exploring the new Batman, the new dynamics that come with it. It isn't the classic batman, but that isn't what it's supposed to be. It plays with new ideas. Even if it isn't the original, that strange and spectacular feeling, a type of nostalgia, that one gets with the original, good old simple Batman, the new things are wonderful too. This book almost gives us a Joker of our own for Dick Grayson as Batman, exploring the old Joker but someone new in the terrifying main villain role.

"When I was a boy, my parents kept a big map of the country tacked to the wall of our dressing room. The map had pins stuck in all the places our troupe was going to stop that season. Different towns and cities were marked with different color pins. Blue pins meant small towns … which meant small shows, less dangerous tricks. Red pins meant big cities. So, big shows and more dangerous tricks. All the stops were marked red or blue .. except for Gotham City, which was marked by a black pin. According to my father, the black pin meant no holds barred. Pull out all the stops. Bring down the house. It meant put on the biggest, riskiest show of the season. No catch wires. No safety nets. Everyone pushing themselves to the limit. I remember one time when I asked my father why. What made Gotham so special? And my father, he looked down at me and he said … 'Some places just have a hunger about them, son. And you either feed them what they want … or you stay, far, far away.'I've felt it many times myself, that hunger … the way Gotham will start pulling at you when it wants something, when it wants more … it's been feeling like that a lot lately. Wild and strange, and most of all -- hungry."

Genuinely compelling, I haven't read a Batman story without Bruce Wayne and I thought Dick Grayson was Batman was a really nice touch - even visually you can tell under the cape and cowl it's not Bruce Wayne.

The story seemed all over the place at first, but all lines up really nicely in the end. James Gordon felt a bit cliche, but interesting enough to keep me reading, and quickly. Art style and dialogue all seem like classic Batman and I couldn't put it down.

I will say reading it in Hoopla on Action Mode makes the whole experience ten times better, I wish I had figured that our earlier. I'm on a bit of a Batman binge here and I'm not stopping anytime soon!
