Loved the theme of this book being cosplay and creative work. I could feel the struggles the characters were facing in their interactions with each other and others. Lots of tribulations and internal dialogue to build up the challenges. My only grief is I was wishing that Kenya would fight for herself against her parents, but I get that it is something that comes with time so I understand the author's choice to have her partner help her fight that fight.

This wasn't what I thought it was going to be but I tried to press on. Despite what the story is trying to tell us, Cam seems to stick around waiting for Kendra to see him as boyfriend worthy; one-day-she-will-see kind of energy. Icky. The more I read, the more I wished the story revolved more around the cosplay world. Like maybe if Cam's ex was a well known cosplayer too. Heck make Cam a cosplayer as well, idk. I just didn't care about the story or characters as much as I wanted to.

3.5, rounding up. Cute book with likeable characters. However, a major issue is that a main component of the plot is a cosplay competition and the reader is pulled directly into the final round. We don't get to see anything leading up to the final round and instead we're only partially filled in on the rest of it. The stakes were undercut by the fact that in the very first chapter, we know that Kenya already has a fifty-fifty chance of winning in the final round. I wanted to experience the entire competition, and ultimately the book fell short because of the choice to start so far towards the end.

This was really cute and I loved the vivid descriptions on how Cam and Kenya designed their projects. However, the romance aspect was not as strong as it should be and the sex scene was written poorly in my opinion. Despite this, the story was overall really heartwarming and a great example of a Black woman navigating and prevailing many different struggles in a predominantly white space, all with a great friend and lover by her side.

This was the exact book I needed to read today! So much fun, a slow burn that didn’t feel slow at all, and two lovely main characters who communicated so well i genuinely had shock when they talked through their problems lmaoo. Diversity and representation were big pluses, but even those on the side this was a very solid read <3

conflict was frustrating and unrealistic, writing was pretty repetitive, and I didn't feel any of the characters had a distinguishable personality. some pretty vulgar lead up to what ended up being F2B. rotating cast of unnecessary and unresolved side characters.
the premise was fun but overall it was poorly executed imo
