What are the consequences of doing nothing? Of trying too hard and never succeed? Subaru learns that if he stays still, other people will die instead of him, but how can someone remain sane when he’s been killed several times, each one more brutal than the last?

"I had a nightmare. A nightmare full of warmth and happiness."

He’s suffering so much, that even Betty decides to help him and honor her pact with him. And, for the first time since he got into this world, he decides to commit suicide in order to have another chance to save his friends –that resolve alone is amazing character development right there.

So, in the next loop, he’s all smiles and radiates friendly vibes –but that’s fake, you see? His mind is a total mess and what he shows to others is the opposite of what he truly feels. Emilia realizes this and somehow, she helps him just by listening to his heartbreaking story.

Consequentially, he realizes he has yet to find who’s responsible for the mysterious deaths of the people in the mansion, the curse that is following him, and also help the people in the village.

But the question remains, what else does he have to give to see their friends smiling again? With each death, he loses himself a little bit more, and the only few things that ground him are the memories he’s got when he wasn’t paying much attention.

To be honest, this is a story that from the very beginning had potential, but I must admit that there are times when my heart aches for Subaru. To be able to see that raw side of him puts me in a place I tend to avoid, for my own sanity. Still, I love how much he grows with each passing chapter. From the bottom of my heart, I wish him all the happiness he can get.

Read it for the #SpringIntoMangaLove mangathon.
