I received this book as a present from my son having read and enjoyed one of Stefan Zweig's works  'The Postmaster's Daughter', previously. I was quickly drawn into the story which is related in the main by its protagonist, the cavalry officer, Hofmiller. Zweig draws a convincing portrait of a young man who has been wholly passive in his upbringing to date with his family, to whom he is not close, choosing his career for him and the military dictating his life choices thereafter. As such he has limited life experience, exacerbated by his far from wealthy background, and this shows in the way he reacts when he comes into the ambit of the wealthy Kekesfalva family. I enjoyed how the author describes the moral dilemma that ultimately confronts Hofmiller after he is gradually sucked into the stifling atmosphere of denial surrounding Edith's condition where everyone is afraid to confront her with the truth for fear of what she might do. The character of Dr Condor is interesting. He seems to act as the conscience of the novel, although his advice to Hofmiller and the value he puts on altruism  is ultimately not in his best interests. The sympathetic treatment afforded to Kanitz/Kekesfalva by Condor in his description of his rise to wealth and status by rather dubious means, seemed to me to be Zweig kicking back against the antisemitic tropes which were rife at the time the novel was written. Zweig's descriptive writing is powerful and evocative, whether he is describing a scene or event in the novel or entering into the anguished mind of Hofmiller. Thoroughly recommended.

“ you can run away from everything else, but not yourself.”✨

“no guilt is forgotten while the conscience still remembers it.”

I will go absolutely unhinged if I read one more pre-WW2 book about an insufferable, weak-minded, backbone-lacking, self-righteous man that wouldn’t survive 30 seconds of a Twitter argument and a hysterical woman. Spending a couple of hours with the thoughts of this excuse of a man, described in an unnecessarily pompous and wordy way, was an absolute torture. I finished it out of pure spite and will recommend this book to anyone wondering why I refuse to read most classics.
