Good story and I enjoyed the idea of it, but it wasn’t written well enough

Pacing is all over the place and not keeping me engaged with the story

It was nice to read a book about a deaf character, written by a deaf author, but otherwise I feel pretty ambivalent about this book. It was all quite vague, might be poor reading on my part but I just felt like I was missing essential scenes between the staccato chapters. I guess the intention was to create a dream-like atmosphere? But it all just felt a bit fuzzy to me, I would have liked a bit more clarity and I don't think it would have unduly impacted the atmosphere. I also really wished the book had picked a lane when it came to theme - either magical university exploring the multiverse with sinister faculty looking on OR necromancy, neither is done justice.

I struggled with the characters as well, Delaney was quite a passive protagonist, stuff just happens to her. The repetition of her full name was also odd, wasn't sure if I was missing something? And Colton. Oh Colton. Edward Cullen has a lot to answer for, unleashing a never-ending supply of YA heroes who are absolute tossers to the heroine because of REASONS. Colton's oscillation between obsessing and being cruel got tiresome.

This has made me excited about heading back to Ninth House, must read Hell Bent soon.

This was such a good book! The characters were really interesting and the magic system (for lack of a better word) was actually quite cool. I thought it was pretty well paced and the overall storyline was entertaining. The only fault I really have is the closer to the end it got a little muddy to follow and I felt at times that I had missed something and was checking that I didn’t accidentally skip pages but apart from that it was great.
