Apparently I three star books for surface very different reasons. I liked this better than some of Akira, but I 3 starred both. This book wasn't bad - it had a story, plot, characters. And the art was fine - in fact it had one of the best Olympus I remember seeing. Just none of it really grabbed me. Not the story and not the characters. It had some paved over rape and violence. But generally it was just fine. Not fantastic and definitely not bad.

Amé que haya tanta mitología griega y cómo interactúa Diana con las demás personas cuando llega al "Mundo del Hombre".
Si lo hubiese leído cuando chica, seguramente habría rallado la papa xD

The gold standard to which all Wonder Woman stories are judged.

Wonder Woman by George Pérez Vol. 1 TPB
One of the all time great comic book achievements.  About as close to perfection as you could expect from a 1980s mainstream superhero comic book.  Admittedly that isn't very perfect, and it's written in the uninviting long-winded style that was de rigueur at DC at the time (following Marv Wolfman's Crisis on Infinite Earths), but the many many high points overshadow the flaws and elevate this run to the rarest level of superhero comics achievement.

This was my introduction to Diana as a comic book character, which is apparently not the way to go according to other reviews, but whatever. I barely know how to navigate the DC universe. She’s a great character, and these comics for sure have some beautiful art and visuals. I enjoyed the first Ares arc, and it gave us some lovable side characters.

The second arc was…less enjoyable. I don’t understand why Cheetah was there. I mean, it’s comics, I’m assuming she plays a bigger role in a subsequent arc, but her appearance was so disjointed from the larger story of the arc that I’m struggling to understand why she had to be introduced here at all. The incredibly antiblack caricature of Chuma also jarred me out of the story pretty hard, so I guess it’s a good thing they both disappeared halfway through. I also have to say that the resolution of the Amazons’ suffering at the hands of Heracles was disgusting. Personally I would’ve had the Amazons shoot him out of a cannon or flay him alive instead of happily hailing their rapist and enslaver as a friend, but I guess that goes against the book’s theme of forgiveness or whatever.

Ultimately, it was fine before it got to all the antiblackness with Cheetah and Chuma and the…everything with Heracles. I suppose I can see why Pérez’s version of Diana was so beloved, but I’m sure there are much better Wonder Woman stories out there.

I get it, it was early, but god I hated Heracles’s final arc at the end and that really ruined the majority of what was a pretty decent comic.

Some of the 80's-ness doesn't age super well, but it holds up much better than most other superhero comics of the era. It's the definitive version of the character. The movie would not have been nearly as successful had not Perez and company blazed the trail three decades earlier.

De cómo se crearon las Amazonas, cómo luego fueron expulsadas a la Isla Paraíso, donde nació Diana, y cómo luchó contra Ares en su primera misión en el Mundo de los Hombres y sus primeros pasos como super heroína.
Genial.
