I usually really enjoy Kleypas but I struggled with this one. all of the references to romani culture felt too vague to feel well researched and meaningful.
also didn’t really like him walking around telling everyone they were engaged before she knew!! that made him unlike able to me.

A dude walking around telling people he's engaged to a woman he'd slept with once, and also not talked to her in any way shape or form about getting engaged? Absolutely not! That's not charming.
Also, I think it's very weird having two Roma characters being okay with being called and also calling themselves g*psy.

DNF - I generally like Lisa Kleypas books but I'm finding it uncomfortable to read about Cam as a Romani character. I have no trust that the author did any research. Is his character authentic or just a collection of stereotypes? An author's note would have helped. I'm not so invested in this book that I'm going to do a bunch of research when my TBR list is a mile long. Moving on.

The beginning of Kleypas' Hathaway series focuses on the oldest sister Amelia, who keeps the family together and doesn't ever expect to marry. But Cam, the charming, compelling Roma thinks differently.

Themes: family obligations, ghosts, grief, Roma, unexpected aristocracy, house fire

This is a solid start to a series, and it was nice to see some of the characters from the Wallflowers series reappear, and I am interested to read the stories of the other Hathaways.

I liked the supernatural aspect of Leo’s grief, though at times the plot got a little dramatic. The romance seemed to just tick along while other things happened, which I actually quite liked. It was a little insta-love but that was kind of the point so I can forgive it for that. On the whole I light quick read.

“I'd agree with you, except that agreeing with you probably means I'm on the wrong side of the argument."

Well, wasn't this a surprise!

I'd stayed away from historical romance for years and years - believing that I knew what it'd be like, and it wouldn't be my cup of tea.

I did know what it'd be like...

... I was wrong about the cup of tea.

This book was just so easy to read and completely unputdownable. I read it in less than 24 hours. Completely binged it! Don't you love when that happens?

I loved the little elements I wasn't expecting creep in, and I'm so glad there are more, as there are a few a mysterious I really need to be solved! Particularly around the Romas heritages.

There were a few things that didn't really float my boat, but I can live with them given the setting.
