I need to have another cry and talk about this at book club before writing a review here.... I read a huge chunk of this today and it has been nothing but crying my eyes out with little water breaks. my library copy now has mascara smudges on it, nothing I can do about that I guess :s

in short - best book I have read in a long time. it is beautifully written, surprisingly close to home and relatable, generally so informative on topics I new nothing about (that I probably should have!). it has changed my outlook on many perspectives in my life. this is a lifechanging book that I will be recommending to everyone. there are some tough, tough topics but so much hope and nostalgia as well.

on a personal note: This book has allowed me to reflect on my own recently-uprooted family history, and has helped me reflect on that as well the now clear impact of this on my family moving down through the generations.

The author did a magical job of tying together a beautiful story of immigration and conflict and history effortlessly. I felt engrossed in this book when I read it, wanting to hear all the details and deeply thinking of the concepts the author rose through the characters. The fig tree was the best part of the story - I loved having this omnipresent voice that felt grounded (haha, get it). Overall, a great story.

This is a surprisingly gentle book about crimes against humanity: one which focuses on a love story and is largely told by a resilient and reflective tree. Shafik interweaves the story of human-on-human violence with reflections on ecological violence. She also weaves through the story of love - fierce love - both of humans for each other and for the nature that surrounds us. Shafik's style is to celebrate defiance in the face of violence, and love in the face of persecution. That she does so while acknowledging the losses is significant. This is a book which manages not to say that love negates trauma, but rather that love and trauma co-exist.
All of which makes it sound more like a book about ideas than it is: this is a book strongly anchored by strong characters. Especially the gentle, mournful Kostas, the indomitable Defne and their passionate, frustrated daughter Ada. Minor characters impress quickly - Meryam, the extraverted aunt whose loudness and physical affection belie her own vulnerability and unsureness; Yiorgas and Yusef are seen largely through the eyes of those they shelter. They are perhaps the most symbolic of entities, and it is notable that their generosity comes from their own decisions to live precariously in order to live well.
I knew nothing going into this book, except that a couple of friends I really trust loved both this book and Shafik's work in general. I know little of Cyprus or the Turkish invasion and massacres that this text centres around. The book was accessible for the ignorant and left me keen to know more. At the end, it is clear that Shafik has been influenced by many of the same natural science books I have been reading lately, which certainly partly explained why I loved so much the twinned themes of human/nature and human/human interactions. I've added pretty much everything else she's written to my tbr now.

A Fable For Our Time 

A book abort war , tribalism and intergenerational trauma. Grief. loss and the damage we are doing to our planet. Also a stark reminder of how brutal and excruciating teenaghood can be. 

This book is beautifully and poetically written. As someone who carers deeply about what is happening about the planet but who finds the subject of climate change quite impenetrable at times this story is a useful entry point into to thinking about these important issues as it goes beyond bare statistics and gives nature a voice.

This is not a book I would have chosen for myself but I am exceedingly grateful to the book club that put it before me.
