😎 woman in power
🔪 he's a hitman
I don't know what it is about Rina Kent books but I'm often confused in the first book for the first bit then it's a fun ride 🤣 I guess it makes sense with this one with Kyle's secret mission.
I enjoyed this book a lot! I saw glimpses of Rai and Kyle in the other books Deception Trilogy and the Monster Trilogy and now it was finally time to read their story.
I had the wrong impression of Kyle 🤣 I originally thought he was more serious like the rest but damn is he really flirty with Rai specifically and always joking. It matches well with Rai's serious/no-nonsense personally. So I ate up their banter 🤣 Poor Rai, she can't win with Kyle always twisting her words to suit him. And his running joke about everything Rai (or others) saying to him insinuates they want to do something kinky with him.
Underneath all that, they had their vulnerabilities. Rai is a woman in a tough spot in the Bratva vying to secure her power. Despite the misogyny and disdain for her, she loves her family and the "Brotherhood" so much. 🥺 With Kyle she also had a little bit of abandonment issues because 7 years prior to the story, he left her abruptly once his task of guarding her was done. Kyle is the lone wolf bent on vengeance for his lost childhood and family. He didn't expect to be super attached to Rai to the point of entertaining ideas of taking her away to Hide from everything. 🥺🥺
What missed the mark for me was I felt like some context of Rai and Kyle's relationship prior to the story was needed. Maybe it's just me but it felt kinda meh initially whe they met again and promptly got married while referencing that past vaguely. But I can go forth.

“Do you know why I'm a shadow, Princess? It's because no one notices when I'm gone.”

I was a fan of this story in the beginning - but I didn’t like the way that Kyle spoke about the morning-after pill (and the things that he was mentioning weren’t even correct). There was also too much smut that lacked substance (imo).
I had high hopes for this one because I was a fan of Kyle when he made cameos in other RK books, but his character ultimately disappointed me. He was too much & his actions made me uncomfortable. He did not respect Rai or her wishes whatsoever.

I’m going to be honest and say I just don’t know how I feel about this one. Like I enjoyed it, but it also didn’t feel like anything new. So I’m giving it a 3 because I liked it, but I didn’t love it. But I’m going to read the second part, so take that as you will. Mafia. Betrayal. Arranged marriage.
