4⭐️ I was definitely captured from the beginning since this story revolves around a woman’s role in the mafia and her arranged marriage. I like the history behind Rai and Kyle. I’m intrigued by his history as well as Rai’s ability to hard. They left on a cliff hanger so onto the next! Spicy

Wanted to try another Rina Kent series, obvs influenced by Larry Reads. Her books are toxic dark romances, so read the content warnings before committing. The Kingdom Duet was a 2.5 for me, this one I did like better, it was a super addicting read. I don’t know that I’ll read anymore from the author, unless I’m looking particularly for an easy addictive read to fill some time.

“When the hurricane hits him out of nowhere, he’ll understand why storms are named after women.”
I mean it is Rina Kent so idk why I even was excited

Good
So out of the Rina verse I felt like something was missing. I feel like everything is going to come out in the next book making this one lackluster.

- Main Couple: Kyle/Rai
- POVs Included: Dual POVs (Kyle, Rai)
Rai is part of a prominent Russian mafia family and she’s been working hard to get to the top. But being a woman in a male-dominated industry makes it near impossible. So she agrees to marry and hopes to marry a man that can be a front for her power. Instead she ends up marrying Kyle — her previous guard who disappeared for seven years and then showed back up claiming to be Igor’s son. Is he telling the truth? And how can she get the upper hand when he’s trying to do the same with her.
I have read A LOT of Rina Kent books. I’m a big fan of hers, especially her new adult and billionaire romances. This is the first mafia romance I’ve read by her and I was unfortunately disappointed.
I wanted to read this because of the character connections with her previous books. Kyle appears in a couple Rina Kent books before this one (most notably as an assassin Jonathan hires in Rise of a Queen). Rai is Reina’s twin from the Lies & Truths Duet.
But I have honestly not read very many mafia books. I don’t know if it’s the genre or just this particular book, but it wasn’t for me.
First off, all of the different names and people get a little hard to keep track of. I also don’t care much about the mafia politics. If I were to enjoy a mafia romance, the politics aspect would have to be on the more mild side. It just is kind of boring. I have enjoyed many books featuring guys in gangs, but the politics didn’t seem as heavily ingrained in the story. I’m not writing the genre off altogether, but I probably won’t pick up any more of Rina Kent’s mafia books and just stick to her other books.
But what really ruined the book for me was Rai.
Rai is rather annoying and bratty. All of her mannerisms are so grating. I despise heroines that act all badass but never actually show proof that they can back up that attitude with actions. Instead, she’s a weak woman who puts on a holier-than-thou bitch face. It’s probably the most annoying type of heroine to me and almost every time a book has this type of heroine, I end up hating the book because she ruins it. Every time she “juts her chin” or “lifts her chin” because she’s SO “badass” just makes me roll my eyes. She’s not badass at all.
Also her whole anger at Kyle for leaving is ridiculous. Like he says, he can’t read her mind to know how much she “needed” him. They weren’t in any kind of relationship other than him being a guard she trusted. So for her to begrudge him for “leaving her” is absurd.
Kyle was okay. He’s dominant and overly possessive, but I like that. He also has a dirty mouth and I LOVE that. He’s obviously hiding some things and I’m curious about them, but not enough to read the other book in the duet.
So I’m just gonna skip the other book in the duet and move on to my next Rina Kent book. I was trying to read them in order according to her website, but I’m gonna skip forward to the Empire books next. Looking forward to those! :)

I’m so glad to finally read Rai’s story. I love her. Kyle is ok, right now I don’t have too much of an opinion on him.
But I loved the marriage of convenience… the tension and hatred and angst…. And of course the breeding kink.
But that ending! And the betrayal!!!
