This was the first audiobook I've ever listened to. This was quite an enjoyable experience.
God, the way Eden Robinson writes is so fantastic. Her sense of worldbuilding, even across her several books is so full and consistent. I couldn't help but see how this book fits in with the Trickster series, and of course it does, Robinson is writing about real places and people from real cultures. And it all works so well.
Lisamarie has suffered so much loss. I loved how we got to see, through this book, how her relationships with her family members, herself, and with Monkey Beach has changed over the years. The non-linear storytelling was really effective in both plot and character development.
I think more than anything, this was a study in human resillience. How does loss and grief shape a person? How does someone who seems to have nothing left rise above their circumstances? How does someone find themselves when they are directionless, both familially and culturally? Lisamarie's journey answers some of these questions. Her ancestors guide her.
This book came out a long time ago, so there's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. But I did enjoy this book a lot, and I'm glad I got to experience more of Robinson's literary world.

Amazing story about spirituality, dealing with loss, and the human experience.
